Corfu: Power outages, sea traffic to Igoumenitsa halted due to gale-force winds

Barometric low “Victoria” has been striking the islands of Corfu and Othonoi as well as Epirus in Western Greece since Tuesday morning. Torrential rains and gale-force winds of up to 11 Beaufort have left several areas without electricity, halted ferry traffic and isolated villages from the rest of the world.

Due to severe weather conditions sea traffic between Corfu – Igoumenitsa has been halted for all types of ships incl ferries. Affected is also sea traffic from the port of Levkimmi, Corfu.

Torrential rains flooded roads, gale-force winds uprooted trees and damaged power poles with the effect that several villages are reportedly without electricity.

A driver narrowly escaped from being swept away by the rushing waters.

The car of another driver was hit by a falling rock due to landslide in Karoumpatika.

The driver was not injured.

In Garitsa, local media speak of “big waves” that have flooded the coastal road.

On the island of Othonoi, north of Corfu, the winds uprooted trees and cut power cables.

Epirus

The heavy rainfall have reportedly caused landslides and flooded rivers and streams.

Affected are the area of Tsepelovo in the central Zagorochoria, as well as Lagada by Konitsa due to big volumes of water.
