Port authorities on Chios have arrested a Greek for attempting to transport ten migrants from the island in the eastern Aegean Sea to the port of Piraeus in the mainland. The “patriot” had carefully hidden the migrants under a huge Greek flag.
The 42-year-old human trafficker was caught during controls conducted by the Port Authorities late on Thursday.
The van was about to board the ferry on the Lesvos-Chios-Piraeus line.
According to a press release issued by the Coast Guard, the van was transporting ten migrants without proper documents.
Authorities confiscated the vehicle, three mobile phones, and a suitcase with 5,000 euros in cash.
They arrested the trafficker and the migrants.
