Seven people were killed and five were injured early Wednesday morning when a vehicle crashed into the concrete base of a toll booth under construction on the Egnatia Odos highway, in Ardanio, northeastern Greece. The accident occurred on a road section near the town of Alexandroupolis.
Police was informed about the incident from a passerby. Ambulances rushed to the spot.
Four of the passengers were found outside the car and the rest was trapped inside.
It was not clear why the car swerved towards the toll booth and how many of the victims and the injured where inside the car.
State-run news agency ANA-MPA reported that the vehicle was transferring irregular migrants.
It is unknown whether the human trafficker was among the injured or the dead.
According to a police statement, the car was reported as stolen from Thessaloniki a day earlier.
The injured are hospitalized in Alexandroupolis’ hospital, one of them is in intensive care unit.
The country of origin of the dead and injured is unknown.
