Greece’s new daily record with 262 coronavirus cases; deaths rise to 216

With 262 new confirmed coronavirus cases, Greece recorded a dramatic increase in the last 24 hours. Health authorities announced on Wednesday evening that the total infections have increased to 6,177 and death toll climbed to 216, after two patients passed away.

Infections rose to 1,747 since August 1.

There were slightly more tests carried out in the last 24 hours, but the number, 1,000 more, is not so high to justify the “explosion” of new cases.

Majority of the new cases are in Thessaloniki (85), followed by Attica with 66, among travelers were 29 cases.

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced earlier today that the average age of infected people in August has dropped to 36. He appealed at younger generations to keep up with protective measures.
After visiting the nursing home in Thessaloniki, where 31 elderly were tested positive, Professor for Infectious Diseases, Sotiris Tsiodras said that the majority of infections in Thessaloniki are related to vacations in Halkidiki, and the majority of those in Attica to vacations in the Cyclades islands.
A weekly report by the National Health Care Organization EODY noted that: total infections stood at 4,900 on August 5 with 13 patients in ICUs. On August 12, before the daily bulletin, infections stood at 5,800 with 26 in ICUs. A total of 25 infections were removed from the charts.
Rt=1 since July 28, 2020.
It should be noted that the “weekly report” was not published since end of July.
Speaking to media but before the new high score today, epidemiologist Gkikas Magiorkinis  said that the situation would be critical if the daily infections are between 250-300. “if the daily infections are steadily at 200, then we should check middle next week if new measures are due,” he said.
August is per definition the vacations month of the majority of Greece. Epidemiologist estimated that the course of the pandemic will be shown after August 15 and 1-2 weeks after the additional measures imposed on Monday. Depending on the number of infections, new restrictions are possible. However, authorities have repeatedly excluded a new lockdown across the country.

  1. Terrible news so many new cases my thoughts are with all of those with coronavirus.
    Is the government going to put Greece into lockdown again, after all earlier in the year when there were fewer new cases daily, Greece was locked down.
    The government insisted that the health of the country was paramount, now that money is been made again, has the concern of the health of the nation took second place.
    If the government decides not to lockdown the country again then so be it.
    If that is the case why did we have a lockdown earlier in the year.
