The number of coronavirus cases in Greece remains high, increasing also the possibility for additional stricter measures. 4,033 infections have been recorded alone from August 1 to August 22, while the number of new cases reached over 1,500 in the last week (August 16-22.) .
Indicative for the worrying situation is that during this time, 269 daily cases were recorded twice, the highest number of daily cases since the beginning of the pandemic in late February. According to the Covid-19 Observatory, the latest average level of daily cases is a new high, more than double the previous ones recorded in early April.
The daily cases are at 200 in the average in the last two weeks.
With the National Health Organization EODY announcing another 264 cases on Saturday, it is obvious that the alarm has not ended in the two largest urban centers, Attica and Thessaloniki.
90 cases were recor4ded in Attica in the last 24 hours, while the epidemiological picture in Thessaloniki is very important with infections exceeding 50. Another 11 cases were detected in the last 24 hours.
Another element of concern is the level of the transmissibility index of coronavirus, the Rt (R0), that has exceed 1 and is 1+, reports daily tanea..
Professor for Infectious Diseases, Nikolaos Sypsas, said characteristically that “with the development of August, everyone understood that the problem is here. We do not need to look at pictures of Italy to be convinced of the problem. I believe that in the next period we will have a higher level of compliance with the measures.”
The members of the experts committee at the Greek Heath Ministry estimate that “the measures taken at the beginning of August will begin to show their effect at the end of the month, and according to the good scenario, we will have stabilization,” Sypsas said.
Alarm about new juvenile intubation
According to the epidemiological report of EODY on Saturday, another child, a male aged 0-17 was intubated from Friday to Saturday. It it the second case in this age category, with the first juvenile patient to remain intubated.
The report shows at everyone and every age group is at risk to get serious ill due to the coronavirus.
At the same time, the number of intubated patients has been increasing and reached 31 on Saturday from 28 on Friday. The lowest number of intubated patients stood at 7 in July.
Death toll has also sharply increased in the last 10 days, with over 20 people to have died during this period.
The number of deaths since the beginning of the outbreak in late February stood at 240 on Saturday and increased to240 on Sunday noon, when two more people lost their lives to Covid-19.
Professor at the Epidemiology Medical School, Gkikas Magiorkini said that there has been an increased endemicity in recent weeks. He stressed that the data support the fact that “there is a large spread of the virus among young people, something that should concern us.”
At the same wavelength, President of Hospital Doctors, Matina Pagoni, pointed at the 3-digit number of daily cases, while there was hope that this could be possibly decreased.
“I’m afraid that this story will continue until the end of August, beginning of September., until everybody has returned form vacations, A lot of infected people are asymptomatic and therefore there is a spread of the virus,” she said adding that “of course, we now carry out much more tests [than in spring] and we, therefore, see more infections.”
According to EODY report on Saturday, the number of total infections stood at 8,381 after 27 cases were removed from the official list of tested positive.
