Coronavirus cases in Greece exceed 13000, deaths surpass 300

Coronavirus cases exceeded 13,000 and deaths are over 300, after Greece’s health authorities announced on Saturday evening that 302 new cases and two more deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

The total infections have reached 13,036 and death toll stands at 302.

According to the health authorities announcement, 29 of the new cases are linked to known clusters, while 21 were detected at the country’s entry points.

Coronavirus infections have seen a dramatic spike in the last couple of days due to clusters in two factories in Pella, northern Greece and Aspropyrgos in Attica.

Even without these clusters, daily infections are over 200, while the numbers of intubated patients and hospitalizations have increased as well.

“The number of intubated patients is of concern,” Epidemiology Professor and spokesman of the Health Ministry Gkikas Majiorkinis said during the live briefing on Friday. He spoke of “over-spread of the virus at local level.”

According to the official daily bulletin on Saturday, 2363 (18.1%) of the total cases are related to travel abroad and 5649(43.3%) are related to already known infection case.

55.4% of the infected are men.

The number of intubated patients in ICUs increased to 53 from 52 on Friday from 42 on Tuesday. Their average age is 70, among them are 10 women. 86.8% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.

170 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.

Two more deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 302.  Of the deceased 112 were women. The average age of the deceased was 78 and 96.4% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.

Rolling weekly average cases at 240 from 201 last week. Below 200 was also before August 15.

Total tests since begin of outbreak are 1,112,992.

Tests in the last 24 hours: 18,638 with 1.62% of them positive.

Of the 302 new coronavirus cases, 279  are domestic: of them almost half are detected in Attica; 29 are linked to known clusters and 27 in tests conducted in Pella (factory cluster).

21 of the new cases were detected at entry points; another 2 travelers already in the country sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.

The remaining cases are:

Each 4 in Rethymno, Lesvos, Larissa, Kozani, Imathia

Each 1 in Chios, Rhodes, Mykonos, Ioannina, Thira (Santorini), Heraklio, Evritania, Viotia, Achaia, Argolida

A 20-day-old refugee baby and his mother have been tested positive. The two were to be transferred from the island of Lesvos in Athens as the baby needed intubation in pediatric ICU. Both have spent the last three days on the streets after the fires burned down the Moria camp.
