Greece strikes new record with 460 new coronavirus cases; 5 more deaths

Greece struck a new record on Friday with 460 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, again with much fewer tests, some 30% less  than originally planned. Attica and Athens registered again the majority of new cases with 207.

The total cases have reached 19,346 and death toll increased to 398 after five more Covid-19 patients died in the past 24 hours

Among the latest fatalities is reportedly a 79-year-old man from the nursing home in Agios Panteleimonas district in Athens, where over 40 people tested positive..

28 of the new cases were detected among tourists.

Confusing coronavirus Briefing

During the coronavirus live briefing on Friday, Professor for Epidemiology Hygiene and health ministry spokesman Gkikas Majiorkinis confirmed the rise of the pandemic in the country. He warned that “we expect the biggest increase towards the end of October due to the weather.

However, he noted that cases such as in the nursing home can change the epidemiological picture of our country. That’s why he recommended special attention “as we may be asymptomatic and we don’t know it as he said.

The number of intubations is putting pressure on the health system, he said.

On his part, head of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias was rather annoyed by journalists questions and in his usual arrogance claimed that everything was under control. He said among other that the virus curve has flattened.

Also the two deputy health ministers present at the briefing were reassuring using the same ‘everything-under-control rhetoric even regarding social care for those suffering under solitude due to isolation.

Of course, the question is: if everything is under control, then how comes that daily cases exceed 350 on daily basis despite fewer tests, the number of Covid-19 patients in need of intubation increase and the average daily deaths are 4 to 5? And  what does the government plan to do to avoid the virus clusters in nursing or other homes and factories? Ops! I forgot! it’s the famous “individual responsibility”!

  1. Odd that the cases/100,000 in Chania is now showing 5-9 (it was 0-4 for weeks) when there has been no cases attributed to the region for weeks.

  2. Individual responsibility, of course! If people just could learn HOW to use the masks it would be better! To go into a store with mask, good, but when they go out they take of the mask and put it in the pocket! And the virus is on their fingers! Next shop, take the mask out of the pocket and put it on again and the virus is all over your face, hands and everything you touch! The mask works fine if you dont touch the outer surface of it and change or wash between uses!!!
