2 high-school children killed, a third seriously injured in Samos earthquake

Two high-school children, a boy and a girl, both 17 years old, were killed during the earthquake that hit the island of Samos short before 2 o’ clock Friday noon. A third student, a 14-year-old boy is currently airlifted to a hospital in Athens.

Firefighters and rescuers recovered the two bodies short before 5 o’ clock in the afternoon. Both students did not have their senses.

According to preliminary information, one of the students was dead, while the other was transferred to the hospital where doctors struggled to revive the child.

The two children were trapped in the ruins of an old house that collapsed after the earthquake. They were walking from school to their homes, on a route they used every day.

When the parents got aware of their absence, they went out seeking them. Firefighters and rescuers were informed and responded immediately with efforts to pull the children out of the debris.

The tragedy took place in a narrow street of Vathi and short before the strong aftershock of 4.9 R occurred.

The earthquake left 8 people injured and extensive material damage as there are a lot of old buildings on the island.

According to latest information by ERT TV, another child has been seriously injured and is been airlifted with a C-130 helicopter of the Greek Air force from Athens to Samos on Friday evening. The 14-year-old boy was injured from falling debris, has reportedly multiple fractures.

Four small tsunamis took place and flooded the businesses and homes.

Authorities warn citizens to keep away form old and damaged buildings as a strong aftershock is expected in the next 48 hours.
