New coronavirus cases in Greece remain over 1000 for a second consecutive day as authorities announced on Wednesday evening 1,151 detected cases in the last 24 hours. In the same time, 27 more people lost their lives due to Covid-19, among them a 16-year-old girl, the youngest victim in the country, so far. The number of Covid-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country stands at 246.
Death toll has reached 5,878 and the total cases stand at 159,866.
Parliament Briefing by Sotiris Tsiodras
Speaking at the Parliament on Wednesday evening, Greece’s top epidemiologist, professor for infectious diseases Sotiris Tsiodras warned that “the virus mutations will prevail.” He sent his own very clear message wearing two masks, one surgical and a fabric one.
Tsiodras warned about the epidemiological situation in Attica and said that the region going best is Epirus, western Greece. He also expressed concern about Achaia (West Peloponnese) and Lasithi (Crete).
He noted that there is big increase of infections in Athens. There has been an 81% increase in north Attica, 67% in Central and 123% in western Attica with average age of infected over 40.
Tsiodras underling that there has been a huge increase of the virus in the sewage of Attica and warned of “7,000-8,000 active infection cases per week across the country.
He said that 75% of the hospitalized Covid-19 patients are over 55 years old.
Note that all signs lead to a possible “hard lockdown” in Attica if not throughout the country.

Analysis of 96 samples from Attica and Thessaloniki between Jan 19-27
31 positive to VOC 202012/01 (Lineage B.1.1.7) in Attica. Of them 7 samples came from hospitals and 24 from Health Centers.
A total of 204 samples positive to mutated strain B.1.1.7/UK lineage.
1 sample tested positive to mutated strain of SARC-C, B.1.351/South Africa lineage.

According to the official daily bulletin 5999 (3.8%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 50438 (64.1%) are related to already known infection case.
The remaining infections are without known source.
52.0% of the infected are men.
The number of intubated patients in ICUs stands at 246 from 244 a day earlier. Their average age is 70, among them are 177(72.0%) men. 86.6% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.
1,138 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.
Another 27 deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 5878. Of the deceased 3457(58.8%) were men. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 95.5% of them had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.
