Tragic end for French tourist Violet Gigano missing on Crete (UPD)

A tragic end for the missing French tourist Violet Gigano. Police officers participating in the big search operation found the body of the 29-year-old woman early Thursday afternoon.

The body was found in a ravine near Cape Krios, southwest from Chania, and some 5 km away from Elafonisi.

The area where the body was found. It looks as if she took the wrong path a difficult one, cretalive reports.

EMAK teams of the Fire Service are reportedly expected to reach the area in the next few hours to recover the body.

An autopsy most likely to be conducted on Friday is to determine the death causes.

The woman has apparently walked some 20 km to Elafonisi where she enjoyed a swim and walked back to the parking where she had left the car through a dangerous trekking path.

She had posted a snapshot of her staying in Elafonisi after the long hiking there.

According to preliminary information, its not clear if she was the victim of a fatal accident or of a crime.

Owners of a hotel in Palaiochora where she had booked a room told Alpha TV that the day she went missing she texted them she would arrived at 6 o’ clock in the afternoon. The message was texted some 3 hours earlier.

Violet Gigano was traveling alone and arrived in Chania on June 21. She disappeared on June 24, the day she exchanged last text messages with her family in France.

After the family lost contact to her, it alerted French authorities who in turn informed their Greek colleauges. A Missing Alert was issued on Wednesday.

A huge search operation was launched with the participation of teams form the police, the port authorities, the fire brigades and volunteers, three drones and a trained dog.
