Unaccompanied refugee minors included in Greece’s adoption and foster system

Unaccompanied refugee minors aged 0-12 years will be included in Greece’s adoption and fostering system under a memorandum of collaboration signed between Deputy Minister of Labor & Social Issues Domna Michailidou and UNHCR-Greece representative Maria Clara Martin, the ministry announced on Tuesday.

This collaboration will help meet the special needs of unaccompanied children following their placement in a foster family, such as interpretation and legal support. It will also promote fostering of these children through awareness-raising campaigns.

“We want all children to be growing with equal opportunities and rights in a healthy and safe family environment,” said Michailidou.

Some 2,100 unaccompanied minors are currently residing in Greece, said Martin, who also mentioned that the agreement will help facilitate the potential involvement of refugee and migrant families in the care of these minors.
