US Supreme Court decision on abortions has Greek Trumpistas out of their holes

A shocking decision in the USA has Christian-Talibans in Greece to come out of their holes and claim a stop to abortions, a legal right women in Greece in 1979. Within minutes after the US Supreme Court decision became known several accounts on social media hailed the decision and started posting against abortions with fake diagrams showing full developed embryos been “violently removed” as they claimed.

“What happens in Greece after the US Court decision? It’s time to defend the rights of the unborn children,” one accoutn posted on Twitter.

It was only in Janaury 2020 that the Greek Orthodox “Trumpistas” had filled the metro stations with posters against abortions.

A so-called “fertility congress” promoting the theory of the unborn child had to be cancelled following a public outrage.

US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, holding that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion.

Roe v. Wade of 1973 was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States generally protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose to have an abortion.

50 years later, the Middle Ages return to the USA, at least in 20 federal states eager to put a break to pregnancy termination.

  • Abortion rights will be determined by states, unless Congress acts.
  • The abortion ban makes no exception for rape, incest or lethal fetal condition.

Biden: “Literally taking America back 150 years”

In an  extraordinary address to the nation, President Joe Biden said that the decision on Friday, “literally taking America back 150 years.”
“The court laid out state laws criminalizing abortion that go back to the 1800s as rationale — the court literally taking America back 150 years. It’s a sad day for the country, in my view.

Biden looked ahead to the elections in November and said voters must vote for representatives who will restore abortion rights.

“Let me be very clear and unambiguous. The only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose … is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law. No executive action from the President can do that,” he said.

“This fall, Roe is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to privacy, liberty, equality — they’re all on the ballot. Until then, I will do all in my power to protect a woman’s right in states where they will face the consequences of today’s decision,” Biden said in his address.

Former President Donald Trump who planted six judges in the Supreme Court to satisfy his Pro Life supporters, said the decision on Friday was “God’s work.”

Thousands of people took to the streets to protest the Supreme Court decision. Famous and unfamous Americans stormed the social media with protest posts.

Greece’s main opposition leader, leftwing SYRIZA tweeted:

I read that the Acronym for the US Supreme Court is SCOTUS. It fits well, as Skotos in Greek means “Darkeness”.

  1. Lets look at some facts in this matter (everybody knows them but anyway):
    1. The man delivers some sperm into a woman. What else does he contributes with?? Nothing!
    2. The woman gets pregnant and she has to carry the fetus for 9! months, with all the problems that this can create. Then we come to the really hard part, she has to give birth! Press out a baby weighing around 3,5 kilos through a very narrow canal in her body. In agony and pain!!
If men were the ones who had to go through this, free abortion would have been everybodys right LONG ago!! Please note that I didnt mention all the other problems that always occure! A WOMANS BODY IS HER OWN, IT IS HER CHOICE!

    • so, when people were saying ‘my body, my choice’ about the vaccines, you would agree that the government has no authority to dictate what i do (or do not do) with my own body, correct?
I personally agree, the government or the law has no business regulating what people do with their bodies. That goes equally to abortion as well as for any other medical procedures.
Now, i see you use the word free – if you mean free as in ‘free beer’ as opposed to free as in ‘free speech’, it is an entirely different matter , when people want the government to pay for something. The law should not prevent anyone from getting an abortion, just as the law should never force any procedure on anyone, for any reason, but nobody is entitled to anyone else paying for any of his expenses or choices.
of course having both of these opinions probably irritates both left and right who are really just both sides of the same coin whose name is tyranny 🙂

“A woman’s body is her own” – a vacuous argument some might say. A woman’s trigger finger is also her body and her won, but that does not grant her the right to use it to kill a person – or even a dog for that matter. And let’s get real – removing the posters was a cowardly act- If the majority – accepts abortion, then it should have the integrity to give the other side a platform to express its opinion. If the opinion is so wrong, then just walk by. Problem is, the poster was disturbing because the subway riders knew it was true. The subway riders just hate themselves for accepting the cruelty of abortion in their midst. They know they are trading comfortable lifestyles for the extermination of a child – a real Faustian bargain.

  2. many people outside of the US (even many in the US) might not realize that the more important issue here was a constitutional matter, on two fronts: the old roe-wade decision was a thinly disguised attempt to dictate legislation from the courts , violating the constitutional separation of powers , and even more importantly, the power to prohibit or regulate abortion (among many other things) is a power not granted to the congress (the federal govt) in the first place – that power would fall to the states, or to the people if a state’s constitution did not explicitly grant that power to that state’s government. The real importance of this ruling is a recognition and reversal of one federal usurpation of states’ powers.
In greece, and in europe in general constitutions are written like the fine print in a sales contract for a used car. Everything that’s granted by the big text is taken away again by the little text. The US constitution still has its flaws to be sure, but on many points it is clear and absolute. Enumerated powers and the delegation of powers are some of those very clear items.
Another important ruling by the supreme court just in the past week is the finding of new york’s restrictions on self-defence with a weapon to be unconstitutional as well, with the court reaffirming even more clearly that all people always have a right to self-defence.
Thats another idea that in greece the government explicitly claims people have no right to.
here we’re a vassal of the empire ruled by the american corporations… it would be nice if we at least had the american constitution as the base of our law!

    • What is a more important issue than a womans right to her own body??? It is a fundamental right for 50 percent (approx) of the earths population! And yet you talk about just laws and so on.

      • well, while we can both agree that every person has absolute right over his own body, we also must not confuse issues. Many people got themselves in a twist over roe-wade because of the specific issue that was being dictated unconstitutionally but we do live in a society with laws, and when those laws are broken or disregarded by the very same government it is a very big problem – and unless those problems are fixed, nobody’s rights of any kind are safe.
In the US, the real meaning of this ruling is that each state has the power to decide for itself on this matter. and you see already some states explicitly making law to ban abortion and other states explicitly making law to protect it. The ruling recognizes that the federal government (i.e. the congress) does not have jurisdiction over the matter.

        • Sorry, a.citizen, but you are the one who is confusing issues here. The matter concerns the right to have an abortion, if needed. Still you write “every person has a right over HIS own body”. When did men start to be pregnant and need an abortion????

      • Nicholas Kalis

A woman does have the right to her body but only to the extent that no one – male or female – has the right to take the life of another except in self-defense. By the way, check the history of Nazi Germany – the institutionalized handicapped were murdered by the thousands because they were supposedly costly society too much. Those for abortion rights seem to use the same argument- let me kill the unborn because it will get in the way of my education or my economic progress.

    • You have that somewhat wrong. Congress has the constitutional right to pass a federal law granting abortion rights to women nationwide if they so choose. Congress was too scared of the evangelical right to pass such a law, i.e. they might not get re-elected if they did. Also it doesn’t exactly help that altogether across both houses only 27 % are women. That was why the right to abortion depended on a court decision rather than a federal law.

I think it is possible that the more left-leaning, liberal controlled House of Representatives will now try to pass such a federal law but it will be blocked by the more right-leaning, authoritarian controlled Senate, who have the final say.

      • A Bill was presented in May by Chuck Schumer.. voted down 51-49…..Bill…S. 4132: Womens Health Protection Act of 2022….A health care provider has a statutory right under this Act to provide abortion services, and may provide abortion services, and that providers patient has a corresponding right to receive such services WITHOUT any of the following limitations or requirements:….WITHOUT A prohibition on abortion at any point or points in time prior to fetal viability, including a prohibition or restriction on a particular abortion procedure….You should read it…

  3. For the sake of accuracy Trump only appointed 3 Supreme Court Judges not 6. It was the most appointed by any single president and in every case they were right leaning, evangelical judges replacing more liberal, secular judges so it was enough to swing the balance. After getting elected by democratic vote the first step on the road to dictatorship is to take control of the courts starting with the highest. Tick in that box for Trump.

No government has the power to decide if women get abortions. There will always be some women who get pregnant and who are desperate enough not to give birth that they will seek abortion as a solution. Governments simply have the power to decide if women can access abortions legally performed by clinically trained staff in sterile, safe conditions or condemn them to seek illegal abortions performed by untrained staff in non-sterile, unsafe conditions with all the health risks that implies. There is research across many countries showing that the number of abortions per 100,000 people is approximately the same in countries where abortion is legal and where it is not legal. Making abortion illegal will not save the lives of any unborn foetus but will massively increase the risk of death for pregnant women.

  4. When that DECISION was implemented 50 years ago….NO ONE ever thought that a fetus would EVER be aborted at full term…or that Born-alive amendment EVEN had to be written… that the DEMOCRATS rejected which is a measure requiring care for babies who survive abortion attempts…..Gone to far…pure evil…….NOW the States will decide…Mississippi’s restrictive 15-week abortion ban what was being objected to…there are so many forms of birth control NOW in 2022 ….”Birth Control | FDA”……Why are they “protesting” in LA.?…There are NO strict California restrictions. Generally, the cutoff for California abortions under this guideline is 24 weeks….However, there are exceptions to this cutoff in California. Because the cutoff test is fetal viability, rather than a specific number of weeks following conception, medical professionals have some leeway to perform legal abortions at up to UP TO about 28 weeks, depending on the individual circumstances.

    • keeptalkinggreece

birth control is not only a woman’s matter.

      • I don’t understand your comment….of course this decision effects EVERYONE involved….where in my comment did you assume it didn’t?….Before you wrote this article did you check to see the “rules” in Europe….47 out of 50 European nations limit elective abortion prior to 15 weeks. 14-week limit: Five countries limit elective abortion to 14 weeks, including Germany and Belgium. 12-week limit: A majority of European countries (27) limit elective abortion to 12 weeks, including Denmark, France, and Norway. Requires a reason for abortion: Eight countries, including Great Britain and Finland, do not allow elective abortion, though some permit abortion for specific medical or socioeconomic reasons. Zero out of 50 U.S. states have currently enforceable limits on abortion at 15 weeks. No European nation allows elective abortion through all 9 months of pregnancy, as is effectively permitted in several U.S. states, including California, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New York…..I have heard that 13 out of 50 States may trigger a abortion ban…if the citizens of that State want this…

      • Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and from others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real, and I can’t vent any anger against them; I only feel this appalling sadness. Somewhere in their upbringing, they were shielded against the total facts of our existence.

  5. i find it extremely judicious to illustrate your article with a view of The Handmaid’s Tale. in the USA, at the same time, abortion is banned, guns are allowed to be carried in the street and no serious action is taken after the massacre of so many children and teenagers: i totally agree with your “Christian-Taliban”, in Greece, but also in Poland and more and more all over the world. appalling period.

    • Nicholas Kalis, JD

“Christian-Taliban” – is name calling. In Logic it is called an ad hominem argument. Gun deaths are troubling but why not an inquiry into what violent video games and violent films have done to the culture. Whenever I raise the issue of violent video games with people, the response invariably is “I played violent video games, and they did no harm to me”. I never find that retort very satisfying. Guns as the problem is too pat a solution.

  6. KTG….I see that you showed President Obama’s tweet ….You may not know this but he PROMISED to address this issue in the first 100 days of his first term…he had EIGHT years…..”Obama Breaks Campaign Promise to Sign Abortion Bill Immediately”…

  7. I have rarely seen such a response on KTG. Despite all the legal arguments pro & anti abortion and the historical context of such arguments, the baseline is one of morality and ethics: does a woman have the moral right to terminate a pregnancy?
We all face moral judgements on a daily basis without having to rely on the courts to decided if we are right or wrong. The consequences of our personal choices are for us, as individuals, to face.
Let the woman decide, not the courts. They do not suffer the ramifications of that choice.
I remember well the situation in the UK back in the 1950s/60s where ‘back street’ abortions were the only choice for most women, attendant upon which was the likelihood of badly botched procedures, deaths or permanent damage. Let’s not go back to that.

  8. I find it absolutely hilarious that the same people who very aggressively, often with a hefty amount of foam coming out of their mouth, wanted to force everyone to take a vaccine, are now all about “my body my choice” – Left wing hypocracy at its finest! I’m all for pro choice, but let’s calm down a little. Abortion is not banned, this decision returns the issue to states, and ultimately to voters. That’s how democracy works. Most countries here in EU have much more strict laws on abortion that most states in US are gonna end up with

I think both extreme sides of the issue need to sit down and stfu. There’s plenty of circumstances where abortion is the only reasonable option. But at the same time if you don’t want kids, then have some responsibility. If you were willing to wear a mask for 2 years, it shouldn’t be a big deal to wear a condom for 48 seconds

    • keeptalkinggreece

reminds us of anti-vaxxers who were insisting it was personal choice and their right to decide what they’d put inside their body, now deprived women of their right what they’ll remove from their body.

  9. The right of a baby to be born Mika you never talk about that right you chose to have intercourse with a man. You sound intelligent enough to know the risk could be pregnancy now you conceived a human being that you want to condemn to death which some people would consider murder sometimes you need to think about your responsibility to human kind.

    • PUH-LEASE!
Firstly, embryos/foetuses are not human beings until they’ve been cooked for at least 24 weeks; any less than that, they wont survive outside the womb so NOT a human. It’s just a bunch of growing cells at that point, not unlike a tumour or cancer, which surely you find it ok to remove.
Secondly, since when do pro-lifers care about condemning people? Should be called “pro-foetus” or “pro-pre-life”. Once they’re born, no one cares – they’re on their own as is the mother that was FORCED to bear and birth them.
Or do I have it wrong and all pro-lifers are also…
      Pro socialism and welfare?
      Pro migration and free movement?
      Against capital punishment?
Or does the right to life end when one has taken their first breath?
You’re safe in there, Foetuses, but it’s a hard world out here… Good luck!

Biden tells us that the recent Supreme Court decision reversing Roe v. Wade takes us back 150 years. That is rich. Biden’s socialism takes us back 200 years to the tired ideas of French philosopher Henri de Saint-Simon (1760-1825) who concocted (does not merit being labeled an “invention”) modern socialism.
