Femicide: Two women were stabbed to death by their husbands within twelve hours. The victims were living on the islands of Crete and Zakynthos in the family homes. One woman had asked for divorce, the other one had filed to local police against her husband for domestic violence.
A 56-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her 60-year-old husband for asking for divorce, media reported.
The crime took place short after 10 o’ clock Sunday morning in Ano Mallaki village by Rethymno on Crete.
The woman was packing her things to leave the family home, the couple argued and the husband stabbed her to death. He then called their 31-year-old son saying “Come home, I killed your mother.”
The son found the mother with injuries in the neck and called the police.
The perpetrator was arrested and confessed to the crime. ” I regret it, I didn’t want to do it,” he reportedly told police.
He claimed further “I was blurred, I loved her, I didn’t want her to leave. I didn’t want a divorce.”
Monday morning, local media report that he blamed the victim for the violent argument saying that she had broken a plate. He claimed that the victim had left the family home three times in recent past.
The couple had three adult children, one of them got married a few days ago.
Victim Georgia, a hairdresser, was a popular member of the local community that is now in shock about the tragedy.
Some 12 hours after the femicide on Crete, another husband was stabbing his wife on the island of Zakynthos.
A 51-year-old man stabbed to death his 40-year-old wife short after Sunday midnight in their home in the village Tsilivi.
According to media information, the couple had an argument, before the perpetrator brutally beat the victim and then stabbed her several times on the chest and the neck with a knife.
The victim was still alive when she was transferred to hospital, however, she died there.
The murder took place in the family home where the couple was living with its two minor children. The third child of the family was living alone.
The perpetrator, a construction worker of Albanian origin, fled the scene and went to work on Monday morning. There he was arrested by police.
According to local media, the victim had filed two complaints against her husband for domestic violence.
Last time it was on June 18. The man was arrested and then set free with the restraint order to not come close to his wife in 100 meters. Consequently, he had left the family home. On Sunday evening, the victim turned again to police station to denounce that the man was threatening her. Half an hour after she returned home, the husband visited her and killed her.
Murders of women either by their current or former partners (Femicide) or their sons ( Matricide )have reached alarming levels in Greece in the last two and a half years: 14 women have lost their lives alone in 2022, five of them since the beginning of July.
