Three of the historic cinemas in Athens will stage an event with free of charge entrance and film screens in the center of the city to raise awareness about their potential closing if the buildings’ owner decides to repurpose their properties, as the movie theaters’ owners say.
The event is scheduled at the cinemas, IDEAL, ASTOR and IRIS on Sunday, April 2, 2023.
The buildings which house the cinemas are owned by Greece’s unified social security fund (EFKA), which recently filed an objection against the exclusive use of the buildings as cinemas, to the Environment Ministry.
On Sunday, entrance will be free of charge and films will also be screened outside of the cinemas in nearby spots Korai Square and at Akadimias 55, with outdoor projection screens and live events also held the same day.
On social media posts it is claimed that the buildings will turn into luxury hotels.
