Nafplio mayor admits throwing garbage and feces at rival’s home

The mayor of Nafplio has admitted throwing feces and garbage at the home of a rival candidate and thus ahead of the upcoming local elections in October.

The battle for the mayor-ship in Nafplio, western Peloponnese, has gone out of control with the current mayor, Dimitris Kostouros, to have left garbage, rotten fruits and dogs’ feces as well as threatening messages at the home of a candidate he saw as rival, Dimitris Orfanos.

Mayor Kostouros was caught 22 times since mid July to throw these items after Orfanos installed first one and then a second security camera.

According to the victim, the mayor was using a municipality car and only through the installation camera he was able to identify the culprit.

Orfanos told news website newsit.gr that he installed the camera after he received small gas canisters with gasoline and handwritten messages reading “Stop what you’re doing or we’ll blow you up!” in at least two occasions.

“He used to come in the car of the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of the Municipality of Nafplio, open the passenger window and throw garbage and excrement in the yard of my house. It has been recorded by two cameras 22 times! What he did is obsessive and sick. I have filed for restrain order against him so that he does not come near my house.”

After the mayor’s behavior became known first in local media, Kostouros posted a kind of apology on his social media account.

Claiming that he was ‘target of insults and slanders” concerning his “honor and reputation” and he admitted that he committed” a “symbolic retaliatory act”.

“Unfortunately, however, this whole toxic situation at some point humanly affected me negatively and led me to a wrong retributive act with a symbolic character, to place waste at the door of a country house owned by Mr. Orphanos.

It was a wrong act, a manifestation of anger and resentment.

I move forward, with my mistakes and omissions, now even stronger!”, the mayor said.

Other candidates could not confirm the mayor’s claims.

While they, the local community, former local mayors, the Greek government and the society waited for Kostouros to resign, he did not.

Ruling New Democracy said that he was never a member of the conservative party.

The Interior Ministry intervened, though, nad has ordered an investigation on the mayor.

The court decision on Orfanos’ restrain order is expected tomorrow, Monday.
