PM cancels visit to Evros, Thessaloniki Fair, to visit flooded areas instead

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has cancelled his visit to the burnt areas in Evros and his annual visit to Thessaloniki Fair where he was scheduled to present the government’s 4-year plan and hold a major press conference.

Reason for the cancellation are the severe floods in Central Greece.

The PM will visit the flooded areas in Thessaly over the weekend, where he will inspect damages and situation first hand and receive information about the local needs, the government spokesman announced.

Mitsotakis’ visit to Evros and Thessaloniki Fair will likely take place within the next week, the same sources said.

Thousands of people in dozens of villages in Thessaly plain are trapped in flooded homes in central Greece, in need of water, food & medicines. They told media they are either on roof tops or standing on beds or tables to avoid drowning. Some reported of hearing elderly neighbors “screaming.”

Organized evacuations with the assistance of the Army and the Coast Guard started as of Thursday afternoon in areas where the water has already reach a height of up to 3 meters.

PS By the weekend the flood waters will most likely withdraw and the full extend of the damages and the loss of human lives will be revealed…
