Cavafy Archive opens in downtown Athens

Famous Greek poet Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933) has a “new house” in downtown Athens where the public and researchers can visit a big collection of his works and personal items. Founded by the Onassis Foundation, the precious jewel in Plaka, the Cavafy Archive, opens its gates to visitors on Wednesday, November 22, 2023.

The Onassis Foundation invested in creating the Cavafy Archive, a tailor-made space in Athens dedicated to the poet’s archive, which was inaugurated in November 2023.

The aim was to create a space for the poet’s writings and books, his personal items and furniture, surrounded by artworks that enable us to gain an in-depth understanding of his growing impact on artists from his era until today, a space open to researchers and the public, open to all, the foundation noted, among others.

The Cavafy Archive houses over 2,000 items, including manuscripts of poems, personal items and furniture, the poet’s literary and personal archive, which includes 966 books from his library and a collection of documents and artworks referencing Cavafy.

Cavafy’s consciously individual style established him as one of the most prominent characters not just in Greek poetry, but also in the Western poetry.
