Poll: Greeks fed up with high prices, discontent with ruling party

The most recent public opinion poll shows the dissatisfaction of the Greek society towards the ruling party of conservative New Democracy, just half a year after the parliamentary elections in summer 2023.

Greeks largely disagree with ND policies concerning especially “reforms” in the health sector and does not seem to buy the government narrative that high prices are an “imported phenomenon.”

According to the public opinion poll conducted by ALCO on behalf of Alpha TV, a large percentage of citizens attribute the high prices to the absence of authorities controls.

Citizens ask for more measures against the constant price increases which they consider as a “domestic issue.”

38% of respondents estimate that there is not a sufficient number of controls, while 28% speak of “pathology” of the Greek market.

87% of respondents are in favor of “new support measures by the government” to deal with high prices, as they stated that what the government has given is not enough.

Contrary to the afternoon surgeries, 53% of the citizens do not agree with the s-called “afternoon surgeries” in public hospitals where patients are expected to pay up to 1,500 euros from their own pockets. 41% of respondents said they agreed, 6% said I don’t know/Don’t answer.

Worth noting how tricky the question is as it mentions “afternoon surgeries at a much lower cost than in the private hospitals”, whereas patients do not pay in public hospitals at all!

The poll shows a declining picture in the satisfaction of citizens, regarding the  work of the government.

45% of those polled said they were not at all satisfied, a percentage that increased considerably from the previous poll by the same company.

Voting intention

  • SYRIZA: 10.2%
  • KKE: 9.1%
  • Greek Solution: 6.1%

It’s domestic “abuse”. We have to ask WHY abusers do what they do. We also have to ask WHY we don’t take action.

  2. Increasingly dissatisfied with the policies of a government – when they voted for them less than a year ago did they not realise what they were getting?
