A 20-year-old student has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Patras in western Greece after contracting meningitis.
The student was found in serious situation by his parents in his home on Tuesday, local media tempo24.gr reported.
The patient, a student at the University of Patra, marks the third case of meningitis on the campus since the start of the year.
The other two cases of meningitis were detected among students in January and February.
In response to this development, regional health officials have said they are consulting with the rectorate to discuss potential measures as they fear that there virus has been spread in the students community.
Health authorities are reportedly on alert as thousands of visitors are expected in the city which is famous for its carnival.
Meningitis is a dangerous inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, typically caused by infection. Symptoms include headache, fever, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light. It requires prompt medical treatment to prevent serious complications.
