The president of the National Organization for the Investigation of Aviation and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety (E.OD.A.S.A.A.M.), Athanassios Binis, has resigned, media reported on Wednesday afternoon.
The resignation became known when a SYRIZA MP brought the issue to the Parliament during the debate for the Tempi train disaster.
He resigned for “personal reasons”, media noted today , Thursday, citing Transport ministry sources.
Binis is an Aircraft Engineer and was appointed chairman of the committee in September 2023, months after it was instituted by the previous term of government and six months after the train disaster in Tempi.
Τhe news of Binis’ resignation coincided with the debate on the motion on no confidence vote against the government for the Tempi disaster in Parliament.
Transportation ministry sources officials attempted to decouple Binis’ resignation from the Tempe rail tragedy issue, saying that the official in charge of investigating the Feb. 28, 2023, rail crash that claimed 57 lives is Deputy President Christos Papadimitriou, media revealed.
By law, the President of the agency must be an expert in air safety and the Deputy President in rail safety, daily kathimerini reported.
A replacement will be appointed soon, the sources added.
