Thousands of Athenians are leaving the city with cars, ferries and airplanes on Holy Thursday ahead of a 5-day-long Greek Orthodox Easter on May 5. Traffic jams and long queues prevail also on Good Friday when the rest of Easter travelers seek to leave foe the extended holidays.
Due to the Labor Day strikes, yesterday Wednesday, ferries and ships remained docked with the result that they left ports in the early morning hours of Thursday on 100% full capacity.
On the roads exiting the Greek capital and on national roads big queues delayed the motorists’ and passengers fun to reach their destination as quick as possible.
Traffic jams especially on Athens-Corinth highway reached kilometer-long, up to the Rafineries of Elefsina.
Traffic jams occurred also in the north exits of Athens, with Easter travelers heading Central or Northern Greece.
May motorists used the Labor day strikes and left the city already on Wednesday morning.
High occupancy has been recorded also on flights and KTEL buses.
This year’s Easter traffic is considered unusually high compared to last year’s.
Important factors for this phenomenon are one more extra Easter holiday on Tuesday, May 7, and that a big number of hotels are already open as the summer vacations season starts in May.
PS rest assured that from today until May 7, TV channels will open their prime time news with live reports from toll booths about the going and returning of Easter travelers.
As if we care…
