Over 400 hackers’ attacks were recorded on the information systems of the Land Registry this week, however, although an attempt was made, the intrusion of a malicious user into the Database failed. This is stated in the announcement of the Ministry of Digital Governance on Friday.
As indicated by the actions of cutting off access and the diagnostic checks that have been carried out, the following data emerges:
1. More than 400 attacks were recorded on the information systems of the Land Registry this week.
2. Attempted but failed, malicious user intrusion into the Database.
A publication referring to “gaining access to the Database” does not correspond to reality, which is confirmed, both by the contractor’s Security Operation Center and by the competent government agencies managing the attack, including the Directorate of Cyber Security of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
3. One of the backups was breached but the attempt to export data (data exfiltration) to a foreign server failed. It is noted that the Land Registry produces daily copies of the database.
4. Agency employees’ terminals were hacked, from which a total volume of 1.2 GB of data has been extracted so far out of the total volume of 200 TB available to the Land Registry, i.e. 0.00059%.
The type of files that have been stolen so far do not concern personal information of citizens, but typical administrative documents of services that do not affect the proper functioning of the Land Registry.
5. No ransomware has been detected so far, and the actions taken drastically reduce this risk.
Later, the Digital Governance Minister stressed that the hacker attacks at the Land Registry had nothing to do with the global digital outage.
