Man dies in Halkidiki as storm BORA strikes N. Greece

A man died in Halkidiki as the storm weather BORA has been hitting also northern Greece since Sunday. The man fell into a deep ditch with his truck and was found 8 hours later, early Monday morning. He most likely died of hypothermia.

The 57-year-old man is the third victim of BORA after two dead on the island of Limnos on Saturday.

The man was driving on the provincial route Porto Koufo – Sithonia and probably lost control of the vehicle as he tried to avoid rocks and landslides on the road.

The truck fell into a ditch 30 meters deep and overturned.

 

The man was found at 7.30 on Monday morning, trapped inside his vehicle, by a passing driver who notified the authorities.

According to state-run news agency amna, he was conscious when he was rescued, however, when he arrived at the local Health Center, he was pronounced dead.

According to doctors’ initial suggestions, the man died of hypothermia.

Storm weather BORA has caused great damages in Halkidiki, especially in the second leg of the Peninsula.

A bridge collapsed in Toroni due to the rushing waters, while 70% of the houses are facing very serious problems, the mayor of the area told state broadcaster ERT.

The night from Sunday to Monday is being described as “very difficult” and  residents of some settlement had reportedly to be evacuated by the Fire Department and the municipality’s crews, who worked non-stop all night.

Schools are closed in 5 municipalities and several roads are closed to traffic, local media reported.

The authorities recommend that residents of Halkidiki avoid unnecessary travel.
