Passenger ferry IONIS lost power due to an electrical fault on Tuesday, resulting in a general blackout. It was temporary adrift while sailing between the islands of Kea and Makronissos in the Aegean Sea, sailing at a spped of approximately 1.5 knots.
The ferry was carrying 183 passengers and 25 crew members and had departed Kea for the port of Lavrio in south-eastern Attica.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the malfunction has been partially repaired, and IONIS is reportedly now sailing under its own power with one of its engines, heading to the port of Lavrio.
Winds of 6-7 Beaufort are blowing in the area.
For safety reasons, two Coast Guard vessels, a tugboat, and three passing ships are nearby to provide assistance if needed. state-run news agency amna.gr reported earlier.
The passengers are safe, and the port authorities are closely monitoring the ship’s course until it has safely docked at the port of Lavrio in south-east Attica.
