Judicial authorities are investigating police officers in Thessaloniki for a 750,000-euro-deficit in a fund intended for extraordinary official expenses of the Greek Police , such as travel expenses for police personnel, due to transfers or secondments, etc.
The case was revealed in October 2022, after the suicide of a 40-year-old police officer who was managing the fund and the Department’s finances for several years.
The role of a supervisor is being investigated as well.
According to information by state-run news agency amna and state broadcaster ERT, the missing amount appears to exceed 750,000 euros is seems to have ended up in investments in cryptocurrencies and gambling.
Under the Justice’s “microscope” are reportedly managers of departments and other services who allegedly provided financial amounts to the police officer who committed suicide.
The criminal investigation concerns acts such as false certifications and breach of duty.
The total number of police officers under investigation has not revealed, so far.
