Public Transport in Greece mark Tempi anniversary with strikes and work stoppages

Public transport means in Greece mark the third anniversary of the train tragedy with 57 victims in Tempi on 28. February 2023 with 24-hour strikes and work stoppages.

At the same time, traffic police will proceed with the closure of  main streets in the center of cities including Athens where bit protest rallies are scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The Tempi protests are schedule to start at 12 0′ clock noon in 90 cities throughout Greece.

24-hour strikes

Workers at trains, suburban proastiakos, ferries and ships will be on 24-hour strike starting at 00:01 Saturday, February 28, 2026 and ending at midnight on the same day.

If you plan to travel by railway or by sea, check with local authorities, travel agents, shipping companies or the Hellenic Train.

Work stoppages in Athens

Metro Lines 2 and 3 will operate from 9:00 in the morning and throughout the day. These two lines will also operate normally after midnight on Saturday night.

Metro services to and from the Airport will operate normally from 9:00 in the morning on Saturday and for the rest of the day.

By order of the Greek Police, metro stations “Syntagma” and “Panepistimio” will be closed from the start of traffic at 9:00 in the morning and trains will pass through them without stopping. They will open again, once the protest rally is over and by a new police order.

Metro line 1 (ISAP) and the Tram will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The last trains on Metro Line 1 will depart:

  • from Kifissia and Piraeus at 20:35,
  • from Monastiraki to Kifissia at 20:51 and to Piraeus at 21:09,
  • from Omonia to Kifissia at 20:54 and to Piraeus at 21:07,
  • from Attiki to Kifissia at 20:59 and to Piraeus at 21:02.

The Tram service will gradually begin at 9:00 in the morning and vehicles will gradually begin to withdraw from service at 7:00 p.m. The midnight Tram service on Saturday night will not take place.

Buses and Trolleybuses are expected to operate normally, with the possibility of individual drivers striking, participating in the 24-hour strike announced by the GSEE and the Athens Workers’ Center.
