Thessaloniki: Protesters Boo Defense Minister (video)

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Society

An angry crowd booed and chanted slogans against two government ministers attending the festivities of St. Dimitrios Day in Thessaloniki. Defense Minister Panos Beglitis and  deputy Transport minister Yannis Magkriotis were forced to hear people chanting “Thieves! Thieves!” while they were entering the St Dimitrios church. Some protesters even tried to break the security chain and approach the defense Minister.

The protesters had gathered outside the church early in the morning and the anti-government slogans had started even before the ministers appear.

As both had a fresh haircut, one protester shouted “Aren’t you ashamed to come here with a haircut?”

Another Protester shouted at Magkriotis “We voted for you and you proved incapable. Go away, thief!”

Amid this tense atmosphere, even deputies from conservative Nea Dimokratia didn’t dare to enter the church form the main entrance but chose side doors.

None of the present politicians dared to deliver even a short speech, with the exception of former ruling party PASOK, Yannis Dimaras, who was expelled form the party for not voting in favor of the first Memorandum of Understanding between Greece and its lenders.
