For the first time after the lifting of the “university asylum”, riot police entered the premises of the university of Thessaloniki on Thursday. Greek media report that a group of 50 people wearing hoods stormed the yard of the Aristoteleio University where a concert was taking place. Two riot police squads followed the group and chased the hooded protesters. They hurled stones, the police fired tear gas.
The rector of the University who was attending the concert, came out and asked the policemen to leave the premises immediately in order to diffuse the tension.
IT is the first time that police enters a university after the law of lifting the university asylum was imposed. The “asylum” prohibeted for many decades police to enter universities in Greece without being explicitly invited to do so by the rectors.
Thursday incident occurred on the side of the Anniversary festivities to commemorate the Athens Polytechnic Students’ Uprising in 1973.
