“State of emergency” will be declared for several villages and settlements in Halkidiki and Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, after torrential rains caused floods and extended damages in homes, businesses and infrastructure. The state of emergency will be declared in areas located in the municipalities of Sithonia, Polygyros, Aristotelis and Volvis in Halkidiki and the districts of Stavros and Nea Vrasna in Thessaloniki. On Friday, local authorities said they were expected the final approval of the Regional government.

Barometric low “Nefeli” stroke with full power, streams swelled and passed through the villages sweeping away everything found in their passage to the sea. Homes and businesses and touristic facilities were flooded with water and mud, sludge, soil and pieces of wood.
The swelling streams came rushing from the mountains through the villages.

Rushing waters detached and destroyed a house in Vrasna. Three adults and two children were rescued by the fire service.
