It is not a secret in Greece of strict austerity that the crisis hits most the elderly with low or very basic pensions. It is not a secret also that in Greece of drastic income cuts and high electricity or heating oil prices, people burn to death or die of toxic fumes because they cannot afford to pay for proper heating.
The latest victims of the brutal austerity are two elderly women on the island of Lesvos (Mytilene) who found a cruel death while they were trying to heat their homes with no proper means.
In one case, one 75-year- old senior died on Wednesday in the intensive care unit of a local hospital. She was hospitalized with serious burn injuries after a fire in her home, in Kerami village. The fire came from a brazier. The old woman used to heat up her home with a brazier as the electricity was cut a year ago due to debt to Public Power Company.
Also on Wednesday, another woman, a 90-year-old, found a tragic death when she got trapped in her burning home. The elderly was living alone in Pasterma village and the fire was possibly caused by the ignition of a gas heater.
