Coronavirus deaths in Greece exceed 15,000; Daily bulletin

Coronavirus deaths exceeded 15,000 on Wednesday, when Greece’s health authorities announced the death of another 21 Covid-patients in the past 24 hours. Two-third of the total fatalities occurred after the launch of the vaccination roll out in the country in the end of December 2020.

Among the latest fatalities is an unvaccinated 20-year-old man with asthma and overweight.

Also on Wednesday, authorities announced 2,331 new coronavirus cases, as the number intubated Covid-patients in hospital Intensive Care Units increased to 347.

The Health Ministry announced on Wednesday the end of locally imposed mini lockdowns due to increased infections as well as “more freedoms” for vaccinated citizens. More details on a separate post here.

A 20-year-old man infected with Covid-19 died during the intubation procedure, health authorities said. The man had a slight pulmonary health issue and was not vaccinated. He had delayed his admission to hospital.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 668,811 infections (daily change: +0.3%). In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 112 infections are related to travel abroad and 2987 to other confirmed cases.

Rolling average: 2172 (2060 previous week)

50.9% of the infected are men.

There are 21 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the total of pandemic victims 15.012. Of these, 95.4% had an underlying condition and/or were 70 years old.

A total of 347 Covid-patients – from 334 a day earlier – are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 66 years. 61.4% are men. 79.8% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more.

According to EODY among the intubated patients:

307 (88.47%) are unvaccinated or partly vaccinated

40 (11.53%) are fully vaccinated

According to EODY, intubated Covid-patients based on age group are:

  • 0-17  :   0
  • 18-39: 11
  • 40-64: 144
  • 65+  : 192

3,190 patients have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

194 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: +32.88%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 160.

The median age of new infections is 39 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).

Of the 2,331  new cases, 8 were detected at the entrance gates of the country and 11 among travelers already in the country.

    Are you not able to make a distinction between unvaccinated and partially vaccinated when it comes to intubated patients? Does the government not provide this data ?

    The reason I ask, is because the uptick in vaccination closely precedes the uptick in deaths in so many places and the drop in vaccine dosing appears to lead to a flattening in deaths which is what we would predict if vaccines were causing a short term spike in deaths.

    This is the “two week worry window” thesis that we have seen significant clinical and societal validation for. in the 2 weeks post vaccination, people seem immuno-suppressed and highly vulnerable.
    I would be curious to know how many intubated patients are partially vaccinated.
