Greece’s highest Council for National Security and Foreign Affairs (KYSEA) approved on Monday the country’s participation in the “Aspides” operation for the protection of free navigation in the Red Sea.
Under the chairmanship of prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the KYSEA also gave the green light for frigate HYDRA to participate in the same operation.
Both participation followed a proposal by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.
After the approval, Dendias visited the frigate HYDRA at the Naval Station of Salamina.

“I visited the HYDRA Frigate at the Salamis Naval Station, which will sail to participate in Operation #EUNAVFOR #ASPIDES in the Red Sea. The participation of the Frigate, together with the assumption of command of the operational headquarters by Greece with a Greek Commander, primarily serves the national interests,” Dendias noted on a social media post.
Frigate HYDRA is to set sail even today, state broadcaster ERT reported.
