Weather Alert in Athens & Attica; Updated warning my EMY

Millions of residents of Athens and Attica as well as tourists received weather alerts at noon on Thursday warning them of upcoming heavy rainfalls and storms as of the afternoon.

The sms was sent via the Emergency line <112> by the Civil Protection.

It is worth noting that many Greeks complain about the “very frequent” and “often unnecessary” use of the emergency line regarding weather conditions or wildfires where the alerts are sent also to those living 40-50 km away.

Another example is that residents of Thessaloniki and Thessaly received the storm alerts on Wednesday, July 3, and saw only a few drops of rainwater.

UPDATED WEATHER WARNING

Anyway, Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY updated its previous weather warning forecast early Thursday afternoon as follows:

heavy storms at local level,  high frequency of lightning and hail without necessarily being accompanied by large amounts of rain.

Heavy rainfalls and storms on Thursday, July 4, 2024, will affect:

  • a. Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, areas of central Macedonia -mainly the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Halkidiki-  as well as the islands of the northeastern Aegean Sea until early afternoon.
  • b. Thessaly and the Sporades islands until the afternoon.
  • c. Central and eastern Sterea -including Attica-, eastern Peloponnese and Evia until late afternoon.

It is pointed out that at the local level in Attica the rapidity of the weather phenomena will be high, with a high frequency of lightning, the EMY updated weather warning stressed.

Rainfall forecast between 3 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024 by the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens.

Winds will be blowing in open seas with intensity of 5 to 6 Beaufort, while temperature is not expected to exceed 30-32 degrees Celsius.
