“Solution for stray animals is euthanasia,” claims South Pelion mayor

The statement of the mayor of South Pelion has triggered an outrage among animal lovers and city counselors in the eastern Magnisia: The problem with stray animals is to be solved with… euthanasia.

The mayor’s solution to the problem was reportedly proposed during a session of the city council, as one of the opposition fraction has complained.

According to media, in a question to the mayor about the issue of strays and how he thinks the problem is being dealt with together with other European municipalities, he allegedly replied that the solution is euthanasia.

The mayor of South Pelion is not the only local “ruler” who supports the mass killing of stray animals, mostly dogs. similar proposals have been made in the recent past, mostly in northern Greece.

What is especially interesting is that mayors never speak about the EU subsidies they cash exactly for the welfare of stray animals for sterilizations, vaccinations, treatment, shelters, care, food and water.

How do they distribute these amounts of money? where does this money go in reality?

  3. We should euthanize people who leave their dogs on streets!!!!

  4. Start at the source of the problem .

  5. I know that local vets there are trying to get funding for sterilization projects but they don’t get it.

  6. A friend of mine cares for about 50 cats. She is now elderly, no longer in good health, in permanent pain and has ruined herself financially over the years. No help from anybody apart from a couple of sacks of cat food during Covid from the city administration. To witness her situation is painful.

  7. To bring it further: There is a lady in Argalasti, running a private shelter (for years now). She takes in the dogs for the dimos but gets ZERO money for it. We know, there are 450.000 Euros sitting for a shelter project in South Pelion (which already exists) but she does not get the money. Without any profound answer or reason. Ask Annika Neumann from Kentavros farm in Argalasti. You will not believe what she can tell you.
