Patrol boat Gavdos was not moving when it was rammed by the Turkish vessel.

The incident took place short before midnight on Monday, February 12th 2018, in Greek territorial waters.

It occurred just a few days after the Chief of Turkish General Staff Hulusi Akar said Ankara was in full control of the Aegean Sea.

The incident triggered tension between the two neighboring countries and had Greece strongly protest to turkey but also brief international fora and organization like the EU, the NATO and the United Nations.

Not that Ankara was bothered. It kept its boats in Greek territorial waters and insisted that Imia was “under Turkish Sovereignty”.

Tension was a bit diffused two days later after Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras talked with his counterpart in Ankara.

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos had informed the NATO during a meeting of the defense ministers. He also showed them footage of the incident.
