Greece has decided to impose a total lockdown and restrict the movement of citizens in order to contain the spread of coronavirus. The measure goes into effect as of 6:00 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2020.
“I have given orders to relevant ministers for the imposition of restrictions to movement as of 6:00 o’ clock on Monday morning, March 23,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised address to the nation early Sunday evening. “This is maybe the last step of an organized democracy,” he added.
And stressed “I will not allow a few flippant people to put everyone at risk.”
He clarified that citizens can still go out in order to cover basic needs such as going to work, purchase food and medicine, visit doctors and hospitals, accompany another person to the doctor or in the company of a pet (dog walking.)
According to state broadcaster ERT TV, allowed is also to go out for family reasons (to take care of parents, children or a third person), for the needs of a pet, for personal sports activity, for visit a public service.
Those needed to go out will have to fill up forms or register online or via an sms – Specific details on this will be made public at 7:00 p.m. Sunday by several ministers and high-ranking government officials.
People outdoors must carry their IDs or Passports and the exit pass with them.
Violators of the total lockdown will be fined with 150 euros, the Prime Minister said.
He added that permanent residents currently in another regions will be allowed to travel home just once.
Greece saw a sharp increase of new coronavirus confirmed cases and deaths in the last 24 hours.
The total lockdown became essential after Greeks kept on defying the government measures and restrictions also on this weekend.

Consider. On an island, where there are not any cases of this coronavirus (total worldwide deaths to date – 13,697; total worldwide seasonal flu deaths this year – 108,979…… ) why are people subjected to 1984-style controls? Who is going to pass on any virus when NOBODY has it?
Plus, as per the figures above, why isn’t there similar impositions for the more dangerous seasonal flu? Despite MSM propaganda, Corona virus is not that much more dangerous than flu – if at all. Before someone complains about so-called conspiracy thinking from this comment, I am taking my information from WHO figures/graphs etc.
Two comments. First is that the virus is much more dangerous than flu for people with certain conditions — namely, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, blood and bone marrow cancers, HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anaemia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid diseases, chronic kidney disease, chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, chronic liver disease, and people whose spleen was removed. Many elderly people have one or more of these conditions, and they are likely to die from the virus.
Secondly, we do not know who has it. The virus has been brought to all EU countries by wealthy businessmen, and all EU governments decided to do nothing because of the “prestige” of these overpaid people. Now that it has been spread everywhere, with the possible exception of some remote islands and very poor areas on the mainland, the only solution is to isolate people who are vulnerable.
Greece has opted instead for the military dictatorship approach — mainly because they have no idea how to do anything else. i could tell them of other options, but they use only their close friends and relatives to advise them. We should be grateful that they are not as stupid as Fatboy Johnson and the lunatics around him currently ruining the UK.
Thank you KTG for all the hard work you put in to provide us with this information!!!
If you don’t all defy these orders then shame on you and shame on the Greek people!
I DON’T CONSENT TO THESE MEASURES! Disobedience to unjust government = obedience to God.
What is the matter with you? Unjust government? These measures are to keep people safe.
Will flights to kos in may be affected
lockdown depends on the virus progress. so answer: nobody can know now.
Unbelievable, draconian measure that seems like ‘tantrum’ politics. A nation under house arrest, unless carrying a relevant pass that allows movement!? Yes, control of disease is important, but so also is personal freedom, and when extreme measures are implemented that impact these, Governments must expect resentment borne of frustration, as people see their livelihoods falling apart and businesses threatened that may never recover, and now each citizen stands to be fined and made criminal when carrying out normal, though restricted, everyday tasks and activities. The Greek people are a wonderful, caring people, ever helpful and kind, and do not deserve this heavy handed treatment by a Government seemingly intent on waving a big stick over them, albeit due in part to the actions of a thoughtless few who the Government are determined to control one way or another.
Tantrum politics? I am no lover of New Democracy, but am impressed by how the PM has dealt with this. As a mother with a daughter who is doing her medical internship in a Greek hospital, so putting her health at risk to help others, and a son with health problems which mean he must not be infected with the virus, I say you should stop your own tantrum, calm down and stay home until told it is safe to resume our normal lives.
I am resident on the island of Paxos and have lived here for 30 years. I am very concerned that even after these latest restrictions and lockdown a group of Albanian builders have been allowed to continue building just 10 meters from my house .The police have said it is ok as we are not on a public road . What can I do ? All of the island except for the essential shops has closed down and our local people are staying home as requested . The ONLY ones working are these Albanians ??????
